Filing a Claim

OVS recommends applying for victim compensation through their online portal, OVS Compass, The pages or screen you can access and the information that is required depends on the type of claim you are requesting – personal injury, essential personal property, or death. Based on the claim type, here is the information you’ll be required to complete for each individual page that applies to your claim.

REMEMBER: Your claim is not filed until you to print, sign, and upload the authorization page to OVS. If you do not submit this page, your claim will be rejected.

  • OVS asks if you would like to give them permission to speak with someone else (a family member, friend, advocate, etc.) about your claim. That person is called an Authorized Representative, If you select “Yes”, then you must have that person’s name, address, phone number, and email to move on to the next screen. If you don’t have all that information, you can select “No” and contact OVS later with all the information and let them know you changed your mind.
  • If you originally filed a claim with the help of a crime victim advocate in one program but later begin working with an advocate from a different program, you can use this VAP Authorization Form to give the new advocate permission to speak with OVS and help you with the claim.
