Elder abuse is a serious and often silent crime that affects many older adults. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 1 in 6 people aged 60 and over have experienced some form of abuse in a community setting. In addition, research shows that elder abuse is often underreported, with only 1 in 24 cases being reported to authorities. The most common types of elder abuse include physical, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse, as well as neglect and abandonment. It is important for individuals and communities to be aware of the signs of elder abuse and to take action to prevent and address it.
Elder abuse can have devastating consequences on the physical and mental health of victims. It is important for individuals to be educated on the signs of elder abuse and to speak up if they suspect someone is being mistreated. Signs of elder abuse can include physical injuries such as bruises, broken bones, or burns. Emotional abuse can manifest as changes in behavior such as depression, anxiety, or withdrawal. Neglect can be identified by unclean living conditions, lack of food or water, or untreated medical issues. Financial abuse may be indicated by sudden changes in financial status or missing valuables.
If you or someone you know needs to be connected to services for older adults and their families, please use the national Eldercare Locator. For more information and resources on elder abuse you can also visit the National Center on Elder Abuse.
